Every type of distracted driving is dangerous

As one of our California readers, you know that there is no avoiding traffic on the road. It doesn't matter where you are traveling or the time of the day, you should expect to share the road with many types of vehicles.

Although you may do your best to avoid trouble on the road, such as by always paying attention to the road ahead, some drivers don't feel that this is necessary. These are the people who often drive when they are distracted.

Here's something you should always remember: Every type of distracted driving is dangerous, even if this doesn't appear to be the case.

You may think that taking your eyes off the road to change the radio station is an innocent action, but it can actually lead to a serious accident.

The three types of distracted driving include:

  • Visual. This is when you take your eyes off the road for any reason, such as to grab a drink, adjust the GPS system or look at a child or pet in the backseat.
  • Cognitive. This comes into play when you are not focused on driving, but instead thinking about something else (such as work or the dinner waiting for you at home).
  • Manual. Taking one or both hands off the wheel, regardless of the reason, is not suggested. There are many things that can lend to this behavior, such as responding to a text message or searching under your seat.

You should never assume that texting and driving is the only serious distraction. Anything that fits into one of the categories above can cause an accident.

If you are part of an accident with a distracted driver, you should start by calling 911.

Once you receive treatment, you can turn your attention to the details of the accident. If you find that the person was distracted at the time of the crash, you may be in better position to file a lawsuit with the idea of obtaining compensation for your injuries, property damage, lost wages and more.
